Erik Satie wrote the Gymnopedies to artistically escape from the 19th century salon style music that was familiar to this father and stepmother. Since their composition, the Gymnopedies have become staple piano works that are frequently performed by amateur and professional pianists alike. They are quaint, soft and poignant works that require a delicate balance between the left and right hands. The Gymnopedie No. 1 has made appearances in various video games, including the Mother series.
