The Nocturne No. 21 in C minor, Op. posth. is a musical work for solo piano written by Frédéric Chopin in 1837. It was the last of Chopin’s nocturnes to be published, and was done so posthumously in 1860. It is famous for its striking simplicity and folk-like melody. Among the 21 nocturnes known to have been written by Chopin, this is one of the three that end in a minor key. The composition is structured as a single movement marked Andante sostenuto, meaning it is to be played a little slower than a walking pace.

Learn how to play Nocturne Op. 55 No. 1 by Frédéric Chopin on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

Chopin’s Nocturnes Op. 55 comprise the 15th and 16th of his nocturne set. The first of the Op. 55 is in F minor, offering a pensive and steady melodic progression in a ternary form. In typical Chopin fashion, the melody is elegantly elaborated and ornamented as the piece progresses, with a striking and dramatic B section to break up the beautiful pianistic poetry of the outer sections. Vladimir Horowitz performed this piece during his television debut in 1968, and it has also become a favourite of pianists throughout the world for its accessibility and depth of character. More recently, Blonde Redhead were inspired by Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 55 No. 1 in F minor in their song “For the Damaged”, writing the coda (“For the Damaged Coda”) with a very similar harmonic progression. This version appeared in Rick and Morty as Evil Morty’s theme.

Learn how to play Nocturne no. 20 op. posth by Frédéric Chopin on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor was published posthumously in 1870, about 40 years after Chopin wrote it. It carries a dedication to Chopin’s older sister Ludwika Chopin with the following text: “To my sister Ludwika as an exercise before beginning the study of my second Concerto”. Interestingly, the nocturne contains several of the thematic ideas from the concerto within it, cleverly disguised and manipulated. Enjoy learning this beautifully lyrical piano piece!
