Roxanne is a hit song by English band The Police. Released in 1978, Roxanne was a single from the album Outlandos d’Amour and contained rather racy themes. Just falling short of a top 10 spot on the UK Singles Chart, Roxanne hit number 12 on its re-release in 1979, but managed to enter into Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and reached number 85 on the VH1 list of 100 Greatest Rock Songs. Sting was inspired to write Roxanne after his experience touring with The Police in Paris. The name came from a character in Cyrano de Bergerac, a play which was advertised with a poster in the hotel foyer.
