Wind of Change by Scorpions is a melancholy song strongly associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991. After many decades of separation between East and West Germany, the Berlin wall finally began to come down, resulting in the reuniting of families and the eventual reunification of Germany. The Berlin Wall was originally constructed on the authority of the Soviet Union to prevent people leaving East Germany for West Germany. The communist rule had resulted in poor living standards as the Soviet Union exported most resources from East Germany as war reparations. This was in contrast to West Germany, where the quadrants belonging United States, England and France were built up by the capitalist countries and had much higher standards of living and freedom. Berlin was situated in the Soviet quadrant but the actual city was divided into four sections in accordance with the agreement between the four powers following the end of World War II. It makes one wonder – if the Berlin Wall had remained, would Germany possibly have ended up as North and South korea are in 2017?
