Korobeiniki is a traditional Russian folk song that was famously adapted by Horokazu Tanaka for the addictive blockbusting arcade game, Tetris! While the tune has become most popular as the Tetris theme, the original folk song is about a young woman meeting a merchant and haggling over goods as a metaphor for courtship. It was based on a poem by Nikolay Nekrasov, with a peasant girl being courted by a peddler in a rye field. After offering her some of his goods in return for a kiss, and he pledges to marry her after finishing his next day in the market.

The Tetris Theme was adapted by Horokazu Tanaka for Nintendo for the classic game Tetris. Based on an old Russian folk song, “Korobeiniki”, it’s become better known as the music from the highly addictive game!
