#Mandinka by #SineadOConnor is about coming of age and rejecting the traditions of your country. Sinéad’s death recently made me remember her music from my childhood and read more about her – she truly was a fighter and a troubled soul who spoke up for everything she believed in with compassion and conviction. Rest in peace.

Korobeiniki is a traditional Russian folk song that was famously adapted by Horokazu Tanaka for the addictive blockbusting arcade game, Tetris! While the tune has become most popular as the Tetris theme, the original folk song is about a young woman meeting a merchant and haggling over goods as a metaphor for courtship. It was based on a poem by Nikolay Nekrasov, with a peasant girl being courted by a peddler in a rye field. After offering her some of his goods in return for a kiss, and he pledges to marry her after finishing his next day in the market.
