Chopin wrote the Étude Op. 10, No. 3, in E major in 1832 as part of his Op. 10 set of piano studies. It is well known as a beautiful addition to the etudes, and has carried the names “Tristesse” (Sadness) and “Farewell” (L’Adieu). The cantabile manner of this etude sets it apart from the ferocious technicality and speed of most of the other etudes in the op. 10.
