Candle in the Wind is a song by Elton John, originally written in 1973, but re-written in 1997 following the tragic death of Princess Diana. This piano tutorial is of the 1997 version, which very quickly became the highest selling single in UK history, selling over 1.5 million copies in its first week of release. In the US, Candle in the Wind debuted at number one and remained there for 14 weeks. The touching live performance at Diana’s funeral has never been repeated, with Elton John vowing never to perform it again unless specifically requested by Diana’s sons. This piano tutorial will show you how to play all of the licks and solos that Sir Elton himself played on his iconic recording, so it will take some practice to master this arrangement, but it will be worth it.

Lyrics: (1997 version)
Goodbye England’s Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch will always carry
For our nation’s golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you’ve brought us through the years

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Goodbye England’s Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye England’s Rose
From a country lost without your soul
Who’ll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you’ll ever know

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will

And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
