A Portuguesa is the official national anthem of Portugal. Alfredo Keil wrote the music in 1890 amidst the British Ultimatum to Portugal, where there was a strong resurgence of their nationalist movement. It became the marching song of the republican rebellion of January 1891 and was later adopted as the national anthem of the Portuguese Republic in 1911. Du gamla, du fria (Thou ancient, Thou free) is the national anthem of Sweden. It was originally known by a different title, “Song to the North” or “Sång till Norden”, but is now known from the words of the incipit. Officially, Sweden doesn’t have a national anthem in their constitution, but Du gamla, du fria is universally recognised within the country as their unnofficial anthem, used at ceremonies and events where an anthem would usually be used. This de facto designation of the song began with Swedish Radio (Sveriges Radio) using it to sign off their transmissions in the evenings in 1938. This piano arrangement is perfect for any Swedish person, or lover of national anthems. It fits well under the fingers and is satisfying to play.

“Speak Softly, Love” is a popular song published in 1972, with music by Nino Rota and lyrics by Larry Kusik. The song was first introduced as an instrumental theme in the 1972 film The Godfather that was simply known as “Love Theme from The Godfather”. The highest-charting rendition of either version was by vocalist Andy Williams, who took “Speak Softly Love” to number 34 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 and number seven on its Easy Listening chart. Larry Kusik wrote the original, English lyrics, and Nino Rota wrote the music. Different sets of lyrics for the song were written in French (Parle plus bas), Italian (Parla più piano), Sicilian (Brucia la terra), and Spanish (Amor háblame dulcemente). Dalida sings the French version; the Sicilian version is sung by Anthony Corleone (Franc D’Ambrosio) in The Godfather Part III.
