Learn how to play God Defend New Zealand by John Joseph Woods on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

God Defend New Zealand is one of two national anthems of New Zealand, the other being “God Save the Queen”. Legally the two have equal status, but “God Defend New Zealand” is more commonly used. Originally written as a poem, it was set to music as part of a competition in 1876. Over the years its popularity increased, and it was eventually named the second national anthem in 1977. It has English and Māori lyrics, with slightly different meanings. Since the late 1990s, the usual practice when performed in public is to perform the first verse of the national anthem twice, first in Māori and then in English.

Learn how to play Creation and Beyond (Theme from Stellaris) by Andreas Waldetoft on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

Whether you’re peacefully campaigning across the boundless universe or bringing total destruction to every species you encounter, this calm-turned-ultra-epic piece from the Stellaris soundtrack will move you. Stellaris is a real-time grand strategy game set in space, beginning in the year 2200. Players take control of a species in its early stages of interstellar space exploration, right after the invention of faster-than-light (FTL) spaceship technology, ready to claim a place as one of “the species of the stars”. Depending on several factors, such as the ethics of the civilization and the player’s desires, the ultimate goal of the empire can range from galactic conquest, hoarding of resources and technological supremacy, to peaceful coexistence with or absolute destruction of all other sentient life. This game, as with many from Paradox Studios (Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron) offers a beautiful soundtrack filled with emotion. This piano tutorial will give you a fun challenge and transport you across deep space (say “hello!” to Elon Musk’s car while you’re out there!)

Learn how to play Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Liszt, and is by far the most famous of the set. In both the original piano solo form and in the orchestrated version this composition has enjoyed widespread use in animated cartoons. Its themes have also served as the basis of several popular songs. The piece consists of two distinct sections. The first is the lassan, with its brief but dramatic introduction. Although beginning on the C-sharp major triad, C-sharp minor is soon established as the home key. From this point on, the composer modulates freely, particularly to the tonic major and the relative major. The mood of the lassan is generally dark and melancholic, although it contains some playful and capricious moments. The second section is the friska which opens quietly in the key of F-sharp minor, but on its dominant chord, C-sharp major, recalling a theme from the lassan. The alternating dominant and tonic harmonies quickly increase in volume, the tempo gaining momentum as the Friska’s main theme (in F-sharp major) is approached. This portion of the song is energetic and offers breathtaking challenges requiring skill few other than Liszt could offer. Enjoy this wonderful piano tutorial and impress all your friends with a very well known and well loved song!

Learn how to play Rule, Britannia! by Thomas Arne on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

“Rule, Britannia!” is a British patriotic song, originating from the poem “Rule, Britannia” by James Thomson and set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740. It is strongly associated with the Royal Navy, but also used by the British Army. First heard in London in 1745, it achieved instant popularity. It quickly became so well known that Handel quoted it in his Occasional Oratorio in the following year. The melody was the theme for a set of variations for piano by Ludwig van Beethoven and he also used it in “Wellington’s Victory”, Op. 91, and in extracted and varied form in the second movement of his Piano Sonata No. 24, Op. 78, “À Thérèse”. Richard Wagner wrote a concert overture in D major based on the theme in 1837. Enjoy this song just in time for Brexit!

Set sail and set a course for all the seven seas, ye yellowbellied scalliwags! Sit down a spell while we (musically) tell you the tale of The Swashbuckling Pirate! No one knows the name of the pirate, only that when he arrives in port, his enemies flee and the lovers flock to him. When he’s on the sea and flies his pirate flag high ships make way for miles. But there’s one thing nobody knows but his crew… He puts on a great concert! Yes, on nights when the sun lingers on the horizon or when the moon hangs high in the sky, the raucous pounding of ebony and ivory can be heard throughout the ship, along with the chorus of crew members belting out sea shanties in the evening air. It is said that mermaids lure their prey through song but it’s less well known that these stories are from those that just heard the pirate’s song—this piano tutorial recounts one of his favorites!

Learn how to play Nocturne (No. 4 from Lyric Pieces Op. 54) by Edvard Grieg on piano with this Synthesia piano tutorial! Please enjoy!

Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist and is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. Lyric Suite is an orchestration of four of the six piano pieces from Book V of his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Both Grieg and the Austro-Hungarian conductor Anton Seidl had a hand in the orchestration. It consists of three pieces revised by Grieg from Seidl’s arrangements, and one piece arranged by Grieg alone. This piece is number 4, known as Notturno, or Nocturne, and offers a light and airy feel in its arrangement.
